Ongoing Projects

In addition to live in-person and virtual programs, we have other options to earn community service hours each month.

Please note that some have deadlines.

Reviews

• Submit up to 5 reviews each month, of a book, movie, TV show, or game.
• Each review is worth 1 hour of community service, upon librarian approval.
• Upon approval, we will email you a certificate for 1 hour of service per review. (Response times may vary depending on submission volume during busy periods. We appreciate your patience!)

Cards for Hospitalized Kids

• Earn 1 hour of community service for making 5 get-well cards for hospitalized children, and dropping them off at the Reference Desk at Bar Harbour or Central Avenue.
• You may use any supplies you have at home.
• There is a limit of 50 cards per month. You will earn 1 hour of service per 5 cards dropped off.
• The cards will be given to the Little Saint Nick Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides emergency room gift bags to children that go into the emergency room or are admitted to local hospitals. Their website is www.littlestnick.org

Kindness Cards

• Earn 1 hour of community service per 5 cards
• You may submit up to 15 cards per month (for a total of 3 hours of service).
• Create cards using any paper/decorations/art supplies you have on hand OR you can make a digital card using any software you’d like.
• Each card should feature a positive/uplifting/inspirational message that could be enjoyed by anyone.
• If submitting digital cards, email a picture of the completed projects to mplteens@massapequalibrary.org. Upon approval, we will email you back a certificate for 1 hour of service per 5 cards (up to 3 hours total per month).

Great Give Back Donations

Donations are being collected 10/4 – 10/18 at both buildings.

We are collecting food for Long Island Cares. You can drop off donations anytime we’re open! Suggested donations: nut butters, beans (canned or dried), canned stews, cereal, rice, pasta and any other healthy foods.

To receive community service credit for donating, please email mplteens@massapequalibrary.org with a list of your donations, and your full name. There is no minimum or maximum amount of donations – donate what you Earn 2 hours of community service credit!

Video Programs

Register for these video programs like our other virtual programs, and you’ll get an email with a video link & resources. Email us a summary of what you learned for one hour of service.

Introduction to Child Care

Learn the basics of child care. Great for teens looking to become babysitters!

• Earn 1 hour of community service
• Email a short summary (100-word min.) of what you learned in the video to mplteens@massapequalibrary.org.
• Upon approval, we will email you a certificate for 1 hour of service.

Upcoming In-person & Virtual Programs

Tween Paint a Duck for the Library!

Thursday, September 3, 2026
at 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Bar Harbour Kids Cove

Waddle on over to the library where you’ll paint rubber ducks that will be hidden throughout the library for all to enjoy. Your creative donations will give our community much to quack about! For Tweens age 10 to 12 years ONLY. Tweens will earn 1 hour of community service.

Help the library plan programs, create displays, find new books to buy, and more. Teens will earn 1 hour of community service.

Sometimes we offer craft kits that earn community service credit for completing and sending us a picture, or dropping them off when finished. If so, they will be listed here.
